[Caption] Astronauts S. David Griggs, right, and Jeffrey A. Hoffman join efforts to fasten one of two snag-type devices on the end of the remote manipulator system (RMS) arm of the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Discovery. Their extravehicular activity (EVA) to deploy the extensions was successful and plans were made for a station-keeping mode between the Discovery and the problem-plagued Syncom-IV (LEASAT) satellite on the following day. The rendezvous did occur and physical contact with a targeted Syncom lever was achieved. However, the communications spacecraft did not respond to the contact as hoped. Operating the RMS arm from inside the Discovery’s flight deck for both this EVA and the following day’s contact was Astronaut Rhea Seddon. Griggs, Hoffman and Seddon are all mission specialists.
